The Art of Doing the Rules #3: Meet a Rules Princess!

Meet Kate Middleton of Bucklebury, a middle-class girl and descendant of a coal-miner’s daughter who captured Prince William’s heart.  It is the first time in 350 years that a commoner marries her prince charming after one of the longest courtships in royal history.  Over the course of eight years, the British press dubbed Kate with the humiliating nickname of “Waity Katie” when her failure to get a ring on her finger became a national joke.  But Kate had the last laugh when she walked down the aisle with Prince William on April 29th.  It’s not easy to capture the heart of a regular Mr. Right, but Kate captured a prince!  She deserves a round of applause for being a shining model Rules Girl by example and is now Rules Princess by marriage.

Top 10 Reasons Why Kate is a Rules Princess

1-      Rule #1: Be a Creature Unlike Any Other – Kate is an intriguing, beautiful and beguiling brunette.  She is always stylish, smiling, fit and feminine—the epitome of a CUAO.

Authors of The Rules, Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider, say it has nothing to do with being the prettiest, richest or most successful woman, but it’s “all about attitude, a sense of confidence and radiance that permeates her being from head to toe.”  When a classmate said Kate was lucky to be dating William, she retorted, “He’s lucky to be going out with me.”

2-      Rule #2:  Don’t Talk to a Man First – When they first met, Kate turned bright red and scuttled shyly away after meeting fellow student known as William Wales at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.  They were friends until eight months later, when William reportedly paid £200 for front row seats to see Kate at a charity fashion show.  When he saw her on the catwalk modeling a transparent dress over a bikini, he said to his friend, “Wow, Kate’s hot!”

3-      Don’t Be a Groupie, and Rules for Dating Celebrities or High Profile Men: The spark at the fashion show led William to make his first move at the after-show party.  Instead of fawning all over him like a groupie, Kate simply walked away.  She had a boyfriend at the time.

4-      Rule #3:  Don’t Stare at Men or Talk Too Much – While other girls stared and swooned at William, Kate treated him just like any other student.  She brushed passed him in the dining hall for weeks before he plucked up the courage to ask her to join him for breakfast. William liked that she was quieter than all the other girls.

5-      Rule #20:  Be Honest but Mysterious – Kate is naturally quiet, discrete, composed and mysterious.  Her nickname is “Her Shyness.”

6-      Rule #16: Don’t tell Him What to Do – When the couple split due to rumors that Kate sought a commitment Will wasn’t ready to make, instead of pleading with him, she simply gave him a taste of life without her.

7-      Show Up Even When You Don’t Feel Like It –Kate handled the break-up royally, being fabulously cool when being seen at Will’s favorite nightspots Boujis and Mahiki.  She always looked immaculate and like she was having fun.  She never got drunk or lost control, but made sure she always looked desirable.

8-      Do The Rules Even When Things Are Slow – When they broke up, she refused to take his calls and dated other men.  She wore miniskirts, got a tan and went out looking like Cindy Crawford’s sexier kid sister.  Within three months of their break-up, William wanted her back.

9-      Don’t Tell the Media About Your Love Life – Kate doesn’t talk about William to the press or try to upstage him.  When he dumped her and she was terribly hurt, she kept calm and dignified. She kept her mouth shut and didn’t go bleating to the media.

10-   Closing the Deal – Kate closed the deal under extremely extenuating circumstances.  First of all, they were very young when they met. They became friends before being college sweethearts. The proposal could not come any sooner because William was in the Royal Air Force and wanted to complete his military training before they married.  When the media pressured him about marriage at the age of 22, he was adamant about not getting married before 28 or 30. William proposed to Kate and announced their engagement at 28.

He also had to groom Kate for the job, because he did not want to repeat what happened to his mother, who married very young and was not prepared for royal life.  William wanted be sure Kate could handle the pressures and that marrying him would not ruin her life.  And finally, he wanted to give his mother’s ring to the woman he was going to spend the rest of his life with and not divorce.  All that time delaying the engagement was never about William’s love for Kate, but about how he was going to protect her so that she would not suffer his mother’s fate.

This modern royal romance is a story of friendship, then true love, companionship, compromise and sacrifice.  When William finally presented Kate with his mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring by a sapphire blue lake in Kenya, it was a declaration of love and his way of keeping his mother’s memory close.  It is Princess Diana who taught her son how to love and protect his future wife.

Kate Middleton has played a brilliant waiting game.  She knew William was worth waiting for.  If Kate can wait eight years for her prince, then we can faithfully do the Rules and wait a year or two for Mr. Right!  It will only be a matter of time before “Waity Katie,” who now prefers the regal Catherine, will bear the modern royal standard and title as future Queen of England.

  1. Good break down of how TR was modeled in the courtship. The part of the breakup was most impactful. It’s often the case we men forget what we’ve got and have to get a kick in pants for a reminder. But it’s a reminder that we kinda want if its handled in a graceful and respectful way.

  2. Yes, I read that Kate was devastated the last time William broke up with her and called her mum sobbing. Mum told her to stop crying, come home and strategize. Kate saw the wisdom and dried her eyes. Following mum’s advice, she hit the town with numerous male companions and partied up a storm, which worked miracles. William came back in a flash. The rest is history…
